There are suggestions in the poem that this is not just about a fictional mermaid but about, possibly, Christ being sacrificed and/or the Holocaust.
Evidence lies in: The standing around of the "doctor, a fishmonger and certain others", as at the foot of the cross where the Roman soldiers stood. The attempted removal of the wedding ring may reference the removal of gold from the Jews by the Nazis.
